Citizens Bank and WJAR-TV NBC 10 have named Providence-based nonprofit Community Boating Center the first Champion in Action for 2012 in the program’s youth-initiatives category.
“NBC is proud to recognize Community Boating Center for its programs that promote building self-esteem and teamwork, and advance environmental awareness,” said Vic Vetters, vice president and general manager of NBC 10. “Through its initiatives, youth develop lifelong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and leadership skills.”
Along with the recognition, Community Boating Center will receive a $35,000 grant, media coverage and volunteer support. The center will use the award funds to support its after-school and summer-camp sessions, “Sailorship” scholarship program and the expansion of water-based activities.
Ned Handy, president of Citizens Bank, Rhode Island and Connecticut, said, “This award will help Community Boating Center continue to offer dynamic educational programs linking youth to sailing, boating and the environment.” •
