PROVIDENCE – Construction has begun on Sankofa Apartments, a $15 million development of new apartment homes in the West End. A celebration was held Monday at the site, which will include 50 low-income rental units as well as a community center.
The development, a project of the West Elmwood Housing Development Corp., will be built on nine empty lots. The site adjoins the Westfield Lofts and Westfield Commons, both housing redevelopments of former mill buildings.
According to Sharon Conard-Wells, executive director of West Elmwood Housing, the Sankofa Apartments are part of a larger initiative, which will include creation of seasonal, outdoor gardens, and a year-round indoor market. Sankofa World Market, featuring local produce, is in its second year.
The apartment project received a $350,000 loan from NeighborWorks Capital.
