GLOCESTER – Construction has begun on new visitor facilities at George Washington Memorial Campground here.
The $783,400 project will create modern, fully accessible bathrooms and showers to the campground for the first time.
The design, by Torrado Architects of Providence, will include environmentally-sensitive elements that conserve energy and cut operational costs, according to the R.I. Department of Environmental Management, which runs the site.
The general contractor is Skurka Construction, of West Warwick.
Initial work involves the installation of an onsite wastewater disposal system and updated electrical systems. Construction of the facility will begin in May and is expected to be finished in spring 2017. The beach will remain open and staffed with lifeguards through construction.
The campground covers 100 acres and attracts more than 5,000 visitors annually. It is a popular destination for fishing, freshwater swimming, boating, hiking and other outdoor activities, according to the state.
The overnight facility includes 45 gravel sites for tents, trailers and recreational vehicles. Thirty-five additional sites will be constructed as part of the renovation.
The project will include: installation of energy efficient lighting, and a new water supply well; an onsite wastewater treatment system that will reduce environmental impact on the campground; a pump-out station for campers to empty sewage holding tanks; highly efficient mechanical systems; and solar energy-heated hot water.
