PROVIDENCE – Construction has begun on The Commons at Providence Station, a development near the Amtrak and commuter rail station that will include 160 market-rate residential apartments when complete.
The site is at 80 Smith St., at the intersection of Canal and Smith streets. In January, the R.I. Commerce Corp. authorized up to $5.5 million in real estate tax credits for the new construction.
According to Bonnie Nickerson, the city’s director of Planning and Development, the project has a 15-year tax stabilization agreement with the city.
The project is being developed by John M. Corcoran & Company LLC and Trilogy Development. It will take place on a 2.85-acre site. The project was described as a $54 million investment aimed at growing demand in Providence for rental housing, according to the documents filed with Commerce R.I.
The 145,000-square-foot building will include underground parking for tenants.
