PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island has the 11th highest median property tax rate in the nation at 1.93 percent, CoreLogic said Wednesday.
Illinois has the highest rate at 2.67 percent, followed by New York at 2.53 percent and New Hampshire, 2.4 percent.
Massachusetts was 16th highest at 1.47 percent.
Hawaii has the lowest median property tax rate at 0.31 percent, preceded by South Dakota at 0.38 percent and Alabama, 0.54 percent.

CoreLogic said that nationally, the median property tax rate is 1.31 percent, meaning that a home valued at $200,000 will, on average, pay annual total property taxes of $2,620.

Property tax rates vary by state, and the total amount can include property taxes paid to multiple agencies within a community. CoreLogic said it calculated the median overall property tax rate at the national and state level, considering all taxing and collection entities to provide a complete picture of the cost of owning real property.
CoreLogic said it found that higher median tax rates are seen primarily among states in the Northeast. It said Texas, at fifth highest, is the exception at 2.17 percent, noting the state has multiple levels of tax collection. Other than Hawaii, it said states with low median tax rates are mainly in the Rocky Mountain and Southeast regions. Most of those states have only a single level of tax collection at the county level, it said.
