MANSFIELD – Covidien PLC has opened a training and education center in Mumbai, India, to offer training for clinicians on advanced medical procedures and technologies, the global biotechnology product provider announced Jan. 23.

The Covidien Center of Innovation India will train health care professionals in Mumbai how to use Covidien’s surgical devices to treat diseases such as vascular disease, metabolic disorders like obesity and Type II diabetes, and cancer.

“This center is designed to enhance physician capabilities in a way that meets the unique needs of the local market, ultimately giving patients in India greater access to advanced procedures and care,” said Brian D. King, president of emerging markets for Covidien. “Expanding our training and education capabilities worldwide is a key component of Covidien’s global growth strategy and this new center in Mumbai will play an integral role as we continue to focus on important emerging geographies.”

Integrating Covidien’s surgical devices and medical equipment, the Covidien Center of Innovation India offers a surgical lab with seven fully equipped operating stations, a simulation lab for clinical scenario training with a human patient simulator, a library stocked with the latest medical journals and four workstations, and an auditorium with 60-person seating capacity and multimedia educational equipment.

The Covidien Center of Innovation India is Covidien’s third training center in an emerging market, with the other centers located in Shanghai, China, and Osong, South Korea. The company plans to open additional centers this year in Istanbul, Turkey, and São Paulo, Brazil.

“Chronic diseases contribute to over half of Indian deaths,” said Mark Rooney, managing director of the India subcontinent for Covidien. “Cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia and many types of cancers are highly prevalent in urban and rural areas alike. Many of these diseases, although common, are inadequately diagnosed and treated. At CCI India, we will focus on innovative procedures and disease management that address many of India’s most challenging disease states.”

Industry leaders will train and assist physicians and supervise them in their individual procedures in hospitals after their training at the Covidien Center of Innovation India. The center will have the capacity to train more than 5,000 health care professionals annually, both those within India and those travelling from the surrounding region.

The Covidien Center of Innovation India builds on Covidien’s growing presence in India. The company currently operates offices in Gurgaon, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, with a strong network of distributors and partner hospitals across the country.
