MANSFIELD – Covidien PLC, a global manufacturer in health care products, was awarded the 2013 Medical Design Excellence Award for its handheld, cordless ultrasonic device Sonicision, Covidien announced Monday.

Sonicision was one of the two Covidien product finalists for the award in surgical equipment, instruments and supplies. The other is iDrive, an ultra powered stapling device.

“We are honored to have two products recognized by the prestigious MDEA program this year … Congratulations to both the Sonicision and iDrive Ultra teams for their tremendous achievements.” Covidien’s Chief Technology Officer Paul Hermes said in prepared remarks.

“We take great pride in Covidien’s ability to develop innovative technologies that improve clinical performance, while striving to reduce overall healthcare costs,” added Hermes.

According to a company release, Sonicion exemplifies the innovation and advancement that the MDEA attests to in the pursuit of improving the quality of health care. The battery powered device for the first time allows surgeons applying ultrasonic energy total freedom of movement while operating. It also allows faster dissection and improved visibility for those performing surgery.
