Cox launches WiFi network in Westerly

WESTERLY – Cox WiFi is available in downtown Westerly for Cox high-speed internet customers.

Cox Communications, in a press release, said the availability of WiFi throughout downtown will provide thousands of customers the ability to access the web “reliably and on-the-go” as shops and restaurants as well as Craig Field, Westerly High School and the Yacht Club are in the coverage area.

State Sen. Dennis L. Algiere, R-Westerly, and Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy, D-Hopkinton, joined Cox Senior Vice President and Region Manager Jay Allbaugh to announce the new network on Jan. 28 at the Washington Trust Community Skating Center. Cox provided free skating and rentals, as well as cookies and hot cocoa.

“The expansion of Cox WiFi to Westerly is an important achievement for Cox,” Allbaugh said in a statement. “Our goal is to make it easier for people to connect online; and we’re proud to do so for the residents of Westerly, as well as its hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.”

This is the third WiFi location Cox has deployed in Rhode Island, according to Cox.

WiFi launched in Providence’s Kennedy Plaza in 2015, followed by Upper and Lower Thames Streets in Newport. The hotspots are part of more than 500,000 that are accessible by customers nationwide, according to the company.

Cox customers with Preferred, Premier or Ultimate Internet packages have free access to Cox WiFi as part of their service. Customers enter their Cox user ID and password to log in to Cox WiFi. Once authenticated, they will be able to browse the internet as they would from home.

Cox customers looking for WiFi access can go to www.cox.com/hotspots and enter their current location to find nearby hotspots. Users can also download the Cox Connect app for iPhone and Android devices and immediately access directions to or from the specific WiFi hotspot address. Once a user has logged in to a Cox WiFi or CableWiFi hotspot, his or her wireless device will automatically recognize and log on to other Cox WiFi and CableWiFi hotspots as long as they remain a Cox subscriber.

Cox customers also have access when they travel, as hotspots are strategically located in high-traffic areas in cities like New York; Washington; Boston; Philadelphia; Los Angeles; Richmond, Va.; and Tampa, Fla. Customers of Comcast, Time Warner, Bright House and Optimum will also be able to access WiFi in Westerly, including Comcast customers over the border in Connecticut.
