Credit Unions of Rhode Island honored by Special Olympics

PROVIDENCE – Special Olympics Rhode Island recently inducted the Credit Unions of Rhode Island into their 2016 Hall of Fame, recognizing the financial institutions for their more than 18 years of support.
Credit Unions of Rhode Island was one of nine inductees, including athletes, a coach and other individuals and groups, according to a press release. Since 1998, Rhode Island credit unions have helped more than 3,000 Special Olympics athletes participate in the organization through sports training and athletic competition.
“We thank Special Olympics Rhode Island and especially the athletes for this honor and privilege to be recognized a second time for this award,” said David Dupere from Wave Federal Credit Union in Warwick.
The credit unions have helped raise more than $800,000 and have sent more than 60 volunteers on average to the state summer games at the University of Rhode Island, according to the release.
“The Credit Unions of Rhode Island are a model for other community and corporate partners as they continue to be a shining example for their unwavering commitment to those in need in our state,” said SORI executive director Dennis DeJesus. “As Special Olympics Rhode Island strives to gain acceptance, inclusion and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities, we are proud and honored to partner with the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, who continue to provide inspiration, encouragement and support of our athletes.”
