SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Dozens of Rhode Island credit union employees this year volunteered for the 48th annual Special Olympics Rhode Island State Summer Games held at the University of Rhode Island.
The volunteers, from Kent Hospital Federal Credit Union, Navigant Credit Union, R.I. Credit Union, Westerly Credit Union and Coventry Credit Union and more assisted escorted and cheered on hundreds of athletes at the games, according to a press release from the Credit Unions of Rhode Island, a member of the Cooperative Credit Union Association.
“I truly, truly love watching the groups come down the hall,” said Adele Moreau, of Wave Federal Credit Union, who was an unofficial hall monitor for the day. “Seeing athletes year after year gives me so much joy. I love cheering them on. It’s just awesome and I wouldn’t miss it.”
Rhode Island credit unions have collaborated with Special Olympics Rhode Island for a number of years, and the organization’s executive director, Dennis DeJesus, lauded the financial institutions’ participation in a statement.
“The [games] were a major success – a celebration of acceptance, inclusion, respect and dignity. Thank you to the Credit Unions of Rhode Island for your volunteer efforts, your generosity and most importantly, your advocacy for the athletes of Special Olympics Rhode Island.”
