Crowne Plaza may be site of ‘medical tourism’ project

WARWICK – A development that could create jobs and boost hotels, restaurants and airport-related businesses is being proposed at the 23.3-acre Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick site on Greenwich Avenue, the Warwick Beacon reported earlier this month.

While the name of a prospective tenant of a single-story, 35,000-square-foot medical building to the side of the Crowne Plaza isn’t being released until agreements are finalized, the development (including two other two-story office/retail buildings) would be tied into medical tourism. Warwick Hotel Associates of Johnston filed preliminary plans with the city Planning Department earlier this month.

The plans also call for the addition of 100 rooms to the Crowne Plaza, which would give the hotel a total of 366 rooms.

Rep. Joseph McNamara, D-Warwick, two years ago introduced the prospect of the state playing off its easy access to the Northeast, hotels and medically skilled workforce to perform elective procedures for out-of-state residents – hence, medical tourists. •
