A Rhode Island family of Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees recently presented a check for $250,000 at the fifth annual John Henderson Invitation Golf Tournament to Special Olympics Rhode Island.
The final donation totaled $270,000 after more donations were received following the check presentation. The funds were raised through a series of invitational golf tournaments honoring friend and colleague John Henderson, who passed away in 2007.
“We are thrilled that we have exceeded our fundraising goal for the John Henderson Sports Education and Training Room at Special Olympics Rhode Island,” said Joe Prazeres, who was also close to Henderson. “John was a wonderful friend and colleague, and I am thankful to all of our partners for supporting us in our efforts to honor John in this way.”
Joe Prazeres and his sons Chris and Cliff made a five-year commitment in 2009 to raise $250,000 to help fund the construction of a sports education and training facility at the Special Olympics Rhode Island headquarters. The facility is named for Henderson, who was an ardent supporter of Special Olympics.
The facility, which is named the John Henderson Sports Education and Training Room, will support a year-round schedule of more than 1,400 training and competition opportunities in 23 different sports. •
