DLT: R.I. recovered less than 66% of jobs lost in recession

PROVIDENCE – As of September, Rhode Island has recovered 65.8 percent of the 39,800 jobs it lost during its recession from December 2006 to August 2009, the state Department of Labor and Training reported Wednesday.
Connecticut and Maine also have yet to recover all the jobs lost during their respective recessions, with Connecticut at an 83.6 percent recovery rate (119,000 jobs were lost) and Maine at 69.7 percent (30,700 jobs lost).
The DLT said Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont have regained all jobs that were eliminated during their recessions.
Year over year, the labor force in the United States rose 0.6 percent, and climbed 0.1 percent in New England. Rhode Island had the largest year-over-year increase in its labor force in September at 1.1 percent, followed by Connecticut, 0.5 percent, and New Hampshire, 0.4 percent. Maine’s labor force dipped 1.6 percent from last year, while Vermont and Massachusetts experienced declines of 0.5 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.
Jobs in the U.S. also jumped 2 percent over the year, with the New England region seeing growth of 1.5 percent. Massachusetts employment grew 2 percent in September compared with the prior year period, followed by Connecticut, 1.6 percent; Maine, 1 percent; and New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, all of which had growth of 0.6 percent, the DLT said.
