CRANSTON – Rhode Island driver’s licenses are getting a new look this month.
Licenses and identification cards will receive not only a new background featuring the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, but additional safety measures to prevent fraud and theft. The last time driver’s licenses were updated was in 2003.
New features include an optically variable pattern, including the state name, state seal, an anchor and stars, as well as a large primary license-holder portrait, along with a smaller “ghost” portrait, and date of birth printed in three locations.
The cards are tamper resistant and feature ink that glows when exposed to an ultraviolet light source. They also will include an inventory control number and a barcode.
Once Rhode Islanders receive their cards, the R.I. Division of Motor Vehicles urges them to destroy their old cards.
Existing Rhode Island licenses will remain valid throughout the transition period. If a resident’s license or ID is valid and not up for renewal, there is nothing they need to do until renewal time. Current cards will remain valid until their expiration date.
The new licenses were designed in conjunction with MorphoTrust USA, of Billerica, Mass., and will be produced using the company’s ExianEvident technology.
