PROVIDENCE – Local 1 percent meal and beverage tax collections fell 1.1 percent in November when compared with November 2015, but rose 2.1 percent in the first five months of the fiscal year versus the same year-earlier fiscal period.

The R.I. Department of Revenue released revenue figures on Wednesday, showing that 1 percent meal and beverage tax collections dropped to $1.95 million in November from $1.97 million in November 2015. While the DOR said the decrease was “marginal,” it said it is significantly less than the 9.6 percent growth reported when comparing November 2015 with November 2014.

Over the year, New Shoreham had the largest percentage increase in collections at 67.3 percent, while Burrillville had the largest percentage decrease at 54 percent. Providence had the largest nominal increase at $35,795, while Smithfield had the largest nominal decrease at $15,024.

In the year-to-date fiscal period, revenue grew to $11.8 million from $11.5 million. The growth was described by the DOR as “sluggish” next to the 7.7 percent revenue growth reported in the previous fiscal-year comparison.
