PROVIDENCE â€“ Actress Viola Davis, educator Elaine Foster Perry, Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons and Providence Performing Arts Center President J.L. Singleton have been slated to receive this yearâ€™s Pell Awards, the Trinity Repertory Co. announced Friday.
Davis â€“ an Academy Award-nominated actressâ€“ will receive the 2012 Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Davis gradated from Julliard and holds an honorary doctorate of fine arts degree from Rhode Island College. She has appeared on stage, in film and on television.
Theater Educator Elaine Foster Perry will receive the Charles Sullivan Award for Distinguished Service in the Arts. She has been an â€śactive force in arts educationâ€ť for more than 40 years.

Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons will receive the Pell Award for Leadership in Arts Education. She was sworn in as the 18th president of Brown in 2001 and served at various colleges including Princeton University, Spelman College and Smith College before moving to Brown.
J.L. Singleton, president of the Providence Performing Arts Center and Professional Facilities Management, will receive the Pell Award for Outstanding Leadership in the Arts. Since joining PPAC as president in 1983, Singleton turned it from near bankruptcy to â€śone of the most successful, not-for-profit theaters in North America,â€ť according to the release.
The awards ceremony will be held on May 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Trinity Repertory Co.â€™s Dowling Theater.
