NORTH KINGSTOWN – Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and House Speaker Gordon D. Fox joined the R.I. Economic Development Corporation and the Quonset Development Corporation to kick off a dredging project at the Port of Davisville on Thursday.

The maintenance dredging will re-establish a depth of 32 feet below the mean low water line in and around the berthing facilities at the Quonset Business Park port. This will allow the port to accommodate car carriers and other large ships.

The Port of Davisville is the seventh largest auto importer in North America, according to the QDC.

The dredging project, which is expected to require no taxpayer funding, is the first dredging effort of the Davisville channel since its original construction during the 1940s.

“The dredging work that begins today is of vital importance to the growth of Quonset Business Park, the Port of Davisville, and most importantly - Rhode Island,” said Chafee in prepared remarks. “This project will ensure that we continue to be one of the most active and successful auto ports in North America and will further strengthen one of our state’s key assets.”

According to the state, Quonset Business Park is home to 168 companies, which employ more than 8,800 workers in a broad range of businesses.
