PROVIDENCE – Green bean casserole may be a Thanksgiving staple, but in Rhode Island, it’s far from the favorite dish at the table.
A survey of 3,000 Americans by Del Monte, the vegetable grower and distributor, said Rhode Island ranked 37th among the states when it comes to its love of green bean casserole, as only 23 percent of those polled expect to eat it this Thanksgiving.
According to the Del Monte Green Bean Index, green bean casserole is most popular in Louisiana, as 60 percent of those who responded to the survey said they plan to eat the dish on Thursday. Oklahoma was second with 58 percent saying they will eat green bean casserole, and Kentucky was third, with 57 percent.
Among the New England states, green bean casserole is more popular in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, where 48, 46 and 45 percent, respectively, of survey respondents said they plan to eat green bean casserole on Thanksgiving. Those states ranked ninth, 10th and 11th on the list. Massachusetts ranked 26th with 32 percent, and Connecticut was 38th with 22 percent.
Green bean casserole apparently is not popular in Hawaii, as that state ranked 50th on the list, with only 17 percent of people there saying they will eat the dish on Thanksgiving.
According to Del Monte, 30 million green-bean casseroles are expected to appear on Thanksgiving tables this week.
It also asked respondents about their favorite secret ingredient for green bean casserole. Thirty-four percent of respondents said bacon, followed by 17 percent who said mushrooms and 11 percent who said cheese. In addition, 8 percent said grilled onions; 7 percent, almonds; 6 percent, sausage; 5.6 percent bread crumbs or crackers; 5.2 percent, garlic; 4 percent, hot sauce or jalapenos; and 3 percent, sour cream.
And for those not in the know, green bean casserole typically is a blend of green beans, cream of mushroom soup and fried onions.
