Dennery gets Howard alumni award

Dr. Phyllis A. Dennery, pediatrician-in-chief at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Office of the Dean of the Howard University College of Medicine.

She received the honor for “distinction in leadership, teaching, clinical care and research,” during the recent Howard University College of Medicine 40th annual Distinguished Alumni Award Dinner in Detroit.

Dennery, an ’84 alumna of the Howard University College of Medicine, joined Hasbro Children’s Hospital in April 2015. She is also the Sylvia Kay Hassenfeld chair of pediatrics at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine of Brown University and a professor of molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry at Brown.

Previously, Dennery served as the chief of the division of neonatology and newborn services at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly Institute of Medicine), the Society for Pediatric Research, and the American Pediatric Society, among others. She has received numerous awards including the 2014 Marion Spencer Fay Award, Best Doctors in America, and the Alfred Stengel Health System Champion Award. Dennery was recently elected to the Association of American Physicians.
