DoE names green ribbon award winners in R.I.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Green Ribbon School awards to the Claiborne Pell Elementary School in Newport and The Greene School, a charter public school in West Greenwich.
Green Ribbon schools are recognized for exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education.
The Pell school, housed in a new facility that opened at the beginning of this school year, was acknowledged for the building’s green-design features, including reflective roof materials, a low-velocity ventilation system and optimal orientation for daylight.
The Greene School was honored in part for of its focus on environmental literacy. Teachers deliver the majority of the curriculum through environmental topics on energy, biodiversity and sustainable development. •
