BRENDAN P. DOHERTY, former challenger for the 1st Congressional District seat held by Rep. David N. Cicilline, has been appointed as the director of the special investigations unit for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE — Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island has appointed Brendan P. Doherty as director of the special investigations unit, the insurer announced on Thursday.
Doherty will manage the development and operations of Blue Cross’s anti-fraud program and special investigations unit, the company said in a release.
“As BCBSRI works to bring down the cost of healthcare, Brendan will play a critical role in addressing fraudulent practices… we are pleased to welcome him to our team,” Michele Lederberg, chief administrative officer and general counsel for Blue Cross, said in a statement.
She noted that Doherty’s considerable experience in law enforcement and public service, which includes 28 years with the R.I. State Police, will be an asset to him in his new position.
Doherty was also a prominent Republican candidate in 2012, when he ran against Democratic incumbent Rep. David Cicilline for Rhode Island’s 1st congressional district.
In 2007, Doherty became the superintendent and commissioner of the department of public safety for the State Police. He also served as director of public safety at Roger Williams University for three years. Doherty has won 24 commendations for outstanding police work over the course of his law enforcement career.
Doherty earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Anna Marie College and a Bachelor of Science in administration of justice from Roger Williams University. Prior to joining Blue Cross, he cofounded and led Doherty Group LLC, a security consultancy.
He sits on several boards of directors and advisory boards at community organizations in Rhode Island, and currently resides in Cumberland with his wife and two children.
