The Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence have been awarded a $5,000 grant by Dominion in support of its Mechatronics program, an educational initiative focused on science, engineering, math and technology.
Through a partnership with the Center for Dynamic Learning, Boys & Girls Clubs of Rhode Island offers teens the opportunity to participate in a state-of-the-art, fully furnished prototype fabrication lab, where they learn the importance of environmental engineering and science, and how their efforts can help preserve the planet.
“While the Boys & Girls Clubs may best be known as a safe and nurturing environment for youth to spend their out-of-school time with peers, we’ve evolved into much more than gym and swim,” said Nicole Dufresne, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence. “We cannot express enough gratitude to Dominion for their support of this program and recognizing the importance of helping teens expand their educational opportunities in this changing world.”
Students develop working skills in 3-D design using Solid Works Engineering software and once teens have completed building their vehicles, they’re able to drive them in controlled conditions. •
