PROVIDENCE – The Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island is one of five winners of a Toyota Family Learning grant for $175,000.
The grant funds new family learning programs because more attention is being paid nationally to the critical role a family plays in a child’s learning process. More than 1,000 organizations competed for the grants, which were awarded by Toyota and the National Center for Families Learning.
Besides the grant, Dorcas will be able to use NCFL resources, including training, communication guidance and program materials to further learning efforts among vulnerable families. The center and Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island will work closely together to support the local community and help create strong family units.
“We’ve always been firm believers in families holding the key to their own success,” said Kathleen Cloutie, Dorcas executive director.
Other grants were awarded in the Bronx, N.Y.; Houston; Lincoln, Neb; and San Pedro, Calif.
Dorcas offers both adult education and workforce-development programs. •
