Why did you select your profession?

[It] combines all the things that are important to me.

Where do you see yourself professionally in 10 years?

I hope that I will continue to take care of patients both in the hospital and in the clinic, to teach medical students and residents, and to work on health care safety and quality issues.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

The advice I’ve received the most often is “learn to say no,” but I’m not convinced it’s the best advice.

What is your favorite escape or hobby?

Spending time with my husband and kids, especially when we’re outdoors.

How do you keep a work-life balance?

I think the concept of a “work-life” balance may be a false idol. … For me, being blessed with a wonderful and supportive husband has been the most important factor.

What one thing in your professional life would you like a do-over on?

I’ve learned, the hard way, that I shouldn’t promise to deliver something based on work timelines that I have no control over. •
