BOSTON – The federal Environmental Protection Agency is accepting nominations for its 2015 Environmental Merit Awards, which will recognize environmental achievements during the past year.
Award categories are available for individuals, businesses, governmental entities and other organizations. Awards also are available under a lifetime achievement category.
Past recipients have included scientists, community activists, business representatives, public officials and other individuals committed to preserving the environment.

The Ira Leighton “In Service to States” environmental merit award also will be given. The award is a tribute to Ira Leighton, who died in 2013 after serving 41 years at EPA.
This award will recognize an individual or organization that has made “significant strides” in facilitating state and federal partnerships to address critical environmental challenges in New England, according to information from the EPA.
An independent EPA panel will select winners.
Deadline for nominations is Jan. 30, and award winners will be invited to a ceremony on Earth Day in Boston.
Nominations are accepted online only at epa.gov/ne/ra/ema/.
