EPA releases proposed plan for Superfund site

BOSTON – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has released a proposed cleanup plan for a federal Superfund site spanning parts of Cumberland and Lincoln.
The site, which was formerly owned by Peterson/Purtian Inc., includes the J.M. Mills Landfill, the Nunes Parcel and an area between these two areas called “Unnamed Island.” Occupying about 500 acres, it is located within the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. The agency listed the property as a superfund site in 1983.
EPA’s proposed plan includes various cleanup options being considered by agency, including its preferred alternative to address contamination of the soil, sediment, groundwater and landfill waste. In a statement, EPA said that its goal is to implement a remedy that addresses contamination and protects both human health and the environment.
Investigations at the site conducted between 2001 and 2012 revealed contamination in the floodplain soils, sediment and groundwater, as well a large volume of waste from the J.M. Mills landfill area that extended into the floodplain along the Blackstone River.
EPA estimates its preferred cleanup alternative is estimated to be approximately $40.3 million.
A formal public hearing on the plan will be held on Aug. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Cumberland Public Library. The agency expects to make a final decision on the plan this fall.
