EAST GREENWICH – Newsweek has released its top high schools for 2015 and East Greenwich High School is the only Rhode Island school to make the grade.
The high school rankings assess schools on a range of data to determine which institutions best prepare students for college.
East Greenwich came in at No. 186 on the list. It has a graduation rate of 98.9 percent and 93.2 percent of students are college bound. Its college readiness score was 81.8.
The top high school in the country, according to Newsweek, is Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia.
In collaboration with its research partner Westat, Newsweek looked at proficiency rates on standardized state-level math and reading/language arts assessments, using proficiency rates to create a high school achievement index for each school. The index was used to identify schools that perform at or above the 70th percentile in each state.
The college readiness index includes factors such as college enrollment rate (25 percent), graduation rate (20 percent), counselor-to-student ratio (10 percent), weighted SAT/ACT composite (17.5 percent), among others.
In Newsweek’s separate “Beating the Odds” list, Classical High School joined East Greenwich High School in the rankings, placing No. 113 and No. 392, respectively.
In this list, Newsweek recognizes schools that “do an excellent job of preparing their students for college, while also overcoming the obstacles posed by students at an economic disadvantage.”
Classical also earned a star next to its name for meeting Newsweek’s equity measure by helping low-income students score at or above average on state assessments.
In this category, Classical scored 85.9 for college readiness, while East Greenwich scored 78.4. Classical’s graduate rate was 99.3 percent, with 97.2 percent of students college bound and a 61.3 percent student poverty rate. East Greenwich’s student poverty rate was 6 percent.
Coming in first in this category was Success Academy in Utah.
