PBN: Tell us a little bit about the purpose of MCLE requirements.

MACK: In Rhode Island, as well as in many other states, all attorneys are required to attend a specific number of hours of continuing legal education courses each year. Rhode Island requires that all members of the bar take 10 hours of continuing legal education courses each year. One of the duties of the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Commission is to help examine and develop the continuing legal education courses. At the end of the day, the goal of the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirements is to make sure that Rhode Island attorneys have the skills necessary to address the current legal issues that impact this state.

PBN: What kinds of responsibilities will you take on?

MACK: The Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Commission has 13 members and oversees all activities of the Education Office related to the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirements for Rhode Island attorneys. The commission meets periodically throughout the year to review the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education policy, applications for continuing legal education accreditation, attorney applications and compliance reports, notifies attorneys of non-compliance, and develops curriculum in conjunction with various bar associations, law schools, law firms and private agencies.

PBN: What do you enjoy about working in law?

MACK: I really enjoy the fact that the majority of time I am working on something I have not seen before. Usually, each case presents unique facts and legal issues that keep my job interesting and entertaining. Besides the cases themselves, I have found that the members of the Rhode Island Bar are friendly and a pleasure to work with. •
