WARWICK – Demolition of the 19th-century Elizabeth Mill has begun in preparation for a planned development that would place a new mixed-use building, featuring housing and commercial space, near T.F. Green Airport.

The mill, which dates to 1875, originally produced textiles, and helped spur development along what is now Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick. Owned by Michael Integlia & Co., the brick mill structure and tower will be replaced with a modern, 300,000-square-foot building that will include street-level commercial space, offices and rental apartments. A timeline for construction has not been made public.

Integlia said in December, on announcing the new plan for the site, that he would retain some of the historic elements of the Elizabeth Mill in the new project, including some of the original bricks and the cast-iron stairs and signs. The mill was a part of the 86-acre former Leviton property, which has now been subdivided into five parcels.

One of the parcels, the headquarters of Dean Warehousing Corp., will not be affected by the razing of the mill building.
