PROVIDENCE – The city’s next mayor has planned a weekend of events starting Jan. 3 to mark his inauguration.
Mayor-elect Jorge O. Elorza said that the “One Providence Inaugural Weekend” is a “wonderful opportunity to showcase our capital city and to encourage giving back to our community through community service.”
“I look forward to joining with residents from across our city and state to celebrate the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the city of Providence,” he said in a statement.

Elorza is asking residents to celebrate their civic pride and give back to the community through volunteerism by participating in his One Providence Day of Service on Jan. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Canned goods and nonperishable food items will be collected for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank at venues across the city. He also is encouraging people of all ages to spend part of their day on Jan. 3 volunteering for their favorite organization or community group.

Information about where to donate food items and how to sign up to volunteer during the One Providence Day of Service will be available on Elorza’s transition website, http://transitionpvd.com/.

On Jan. 4, the Providence Children’s Museum will host the Children’s Inaugural Celebration from noon to 3 p.m. In addition to the museum’s regular exhibits, the celebration will include a program by Providence Youth Arts Collaborative, including the Manton Avenue Project, CityArts, Everett Theatre Company, Community Music Works and AS220 Youth.

At 7 p.m., Elorza will host the One Providence Inaugural Celebration at the Cranston Street Armory.

“We are planning an especially enjoyable evening that highlights Providence’s world-class artistic, cultural and culinary scene,” Elorza said.

All events are free and open to the public. Tickets will need to be reserved for those who want to attend the One Providence Inaugural Celebration. Tickets can be reserved at the transition website, http://transitionpvd.com/.
