Elorza serves up lunch

PROVIDENCE – Providence Mayor Jorge O. Elorza surprised more than 70 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence South Side Clubhouse with a special pizza lunch on April 24.
April 24 was the last day of April vacation for the youth.
For more than an hour, Mayor Elorza spoke with elementary school-aged members and teens about their aspirations for the future, their current academic year, and plans for the summer. He also answered questions about his childhood and career path.
Club staff encouraged members to ask the one question they wanted to know about most. One young member asked Elorza what makes him happy.
“Helping other people,” the mayor said.
Later, the mayor noted that the clubhouse is doing “exciting work to provide enriching activities to help our children develop into well-rounded, mature young adults. It’s been a pleasure getting to know the kids and I look forward to continue supporting their growth.”
Nicole Dufresne, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence said that the experience was special for youth members.
“This is a community leader our members have seen on television and read about, but it was an entirely different experience for them to sit across from him and engage in conversations they won’t soon forget,” she said. “The underlying message of the visit is that Mayor Elorza truly cares about these youth.”
