Employment, wages increase in Providence County in 4Q

WASHINGTON – From December 2011 to December 2012, employment increased in 287 of the 328 largest counties in the United States, including Providence County, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday.

Employment in Providence County increased 1.4 percent to 272,700. The 1.4 percent increase from December 2011 to December 2012 earned the county the 181th ranking out of the nation’s 328 most populous counties.

Rhode Island as a whole saw a 1 percent increase in employment from December 2011 to December 2012. There were 456,400 workers in the Ocean State at the end of the fourth quarter, according to the BLS.

Massachusetts saw employment increase 1.3 percent year over year in December to 3.3 million. Nationally, the number of employed Americans grew 1.9 percent during the same period.

The average weekly wage for a worker in Providence County during the fourth quarter of 2012 was $992, a 3 percent increase from the fourth quarter of 2011.

Statewide, Rhode Island’s average weekly wage increased 2.7 percent to $945, while Massachusetts’s weekly wage grew 4.8 percent to $1,248.

Year over year during the fourth quarter, the average weekly wage in the U.S. increased 4.7 percent to $1,000.
