NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Former Providence Police Chief Dean Esserman, who recently resigned as chief of the New Haven Police Department, has been hired to be Quinnipiac University’s senior professional-in-residence for its Emergency Management Team, according to WJAR-TV NBC 10.
Esserman was chief of police in Providence from 2003 until he resigned in 2011 in the wake of criticism for his handling of a high school graduation party at his home. He subsequently became the chief of police in New Haven, which is where then-Mayor David N. Cicilline had recruited him earlier to lead the Providence police force.
Esserman had endured two suspensions while leading the New Haven force, the most recent for berating staff at a New Haven restaurant. He subsequently resigned on Sept. 2.
According to WJAR, a spokesperson for Quinnipiac said Esserman will be responsible for the school’s emergency response plan and will be charged with making sure that best practices are being followed.
