Exchange says job-search program is succeeding

Posted 6/11/12

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Education Exchange says its jobs-search program has helped nearly 70 percent of participants find gainful employment thanks to a hands-on approach that focuses on adapting workers’ skills to available jobs.

“[Participants] have a variety of skills and abilities in one area and may not realize they have skills transferable to other industries,” said Peggy Benz, executive director and CEO of the nonprofit. “Once that’s determined, we’re able to help the person focus in on other opportunities they may not necessarily have thought about.”

This is the third year the Education Exchange has run the program, free to local residents through the town of South Kingstown Community Development Block Grant program and for a small fee to other Rhode Island residents.

The program covers career awareness, cover-letter and resume-writing assistance, interview practice and one-on-one counseling.

The program will start a fourth season beginning either at the end of August or early September at the organization’s main office in Peace Dale village. •
