Though Douglas Lumber was founded nearly 40 years ago, the Smithfield-based company still prides itself on being a family-owned and operated Rhode Island business.
From its 100,000-square-foot facility, Douglas boasts one of the largest lumberyards in the Northeast, a full home center (including a kitchen department), a flooring center and a full paint department.
With projected revenue of $28 million this year (up $2 million from 2013), Douglas has 60 employees and three more hires are expected before the end of the year.
“Building or purchasing a home is the largest investment one will make in their lifetime,” said Steven Carlino, the company’s president. “We are passionate about helping people facilitate what can be a stressful process. We enjoy playing a role in making someone’s dream home or remodel become a reality.”
In the past 12 months, the company has started work on a 10-unit panelization project in Newport as well as a 30-building, older-than-55 community in northern Rhode Island.
Carlino says growth and innovation are extremely important to Douglas. The expansion of the company’s showroom over the past five years includes more realistic representations of products such as windows, doors, roofing, siding, trusses and kitchen cabinetry.
“By displaying these products in realistic mock home settings,” Carlino said, “we allow customers to be able to see, touch and feel these products in an effort to make their selection process easier.”
Douglas has also invested in a new flooring showroom, including expanding its selection and offering installation services.
