PROVIDENCE – UnitedHealthcare has recognized four Rhode Island companies in its 2014 Well Deserved Awards, presented annually to employers who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving employees’ health and well-being through work-site wellness programs.

FM Global in Johnston was recognized as a Well Deserved Award winner for the first time this year, the sixth year UnitedHealthcare has honored companies for the success of their wellness programs. Hexagon Metrology in North Kingstown, along with AAA Southern New England and the Narragansett Bay Commission, both in Providence, received honorable mentions.

“We are honored to recognize these leaders for implementing innovative and valuable wellness programs, along with their overall passion for helping employees improve their health,” said Carol Calvin, national director of UnitedHealthcare Health and Wellness. “We’ve seen increased interest in wellness programs because more employers are recognizing they can support their employees’ desire to improve their health. By doing so, they can create a happier, healthier workforce while reducing costs for employees and the company.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has shown that effective workplace programs may reduce health risks and improve the quality of life for American workers, UnitedHealthcare said, and the Wellness Council of America advocates wellness programs as an investment to address rising health care costs.
