PAWTUCKET – Farm Fresh Rhode Island is one of 20 organizations chosen by Newman’s Own Foundation to participate in its #GivingTuesday Match Challenge, which will match up to $10,000 in donations made by Nov. 29 to the Pawtucket-based organization through a CrowdRise website appeal.

Giving Tuesday, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday is a day promoting financial support of organizations that improve community life. Donations made between Nov. 22-29 to Farm Fresh Rhode Island will support multiple access, education and distribution programs, including allowing farmers’ markets to operate year-round, incentivizing and subsidizing EBT/SNAP use at those markets and facilitating buying relationships between Rhode Island producers, businesses and institutions.

Sheri Griffin, co-executive director of Farm Fresh Rhode Island, enjoys connecting the state’s residents to its food producers, but admits there’s still a lot to improve on.

“We estimate that just 1 percent of the food consumed in Rhode Island is locally-grown or caught. …Grocery store shelves, cafeterias, schools, senior meal sites — there are so many ways to tie in local food better,” she said.

The mission of Farm Fresh Rhode Island is to preserve farmland, build healthier communities, strengthen local community-based businesses, increase access to fresh food for all, and improve the impact of food production and distribution on the environment.
