Farm Fresh Rhode Island staff members and volunteers recently collected 128 bushels – more than 10,000 apples – which were donated to 12 food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Rhode Island.
The apples were the result of four gleaning trips to Hill Orchards and Barden Family Orchard, where volunteers gathered the remaining apples not harvested by the farmers. Many of the volunteers were from Brown University and Johnson & Wales University; a Bar/Bat Mitzvah class from Temple Emanuel in Providence also participated.
The food pantries and soup kitchens that benefited from the gleanings were: Amos House, Camp St. Ministries, Crossroads Family Shelter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, East Bay Food Pantry, First Baptist Church Food Pantry, Full Plate Kosher Food Pantry, HeadsUp PICA Community Meal, Jonnycake Food Pantry, Progreso Latino/Central Falls Food Pantry, St. Matthew’s Church Food Pantry and St. Teresa’s Food Pantry. •
