Farm Fresh gets $25K to expand food program

PAWTUCKET – Farm Fresh Rhode Island, a nonprofit that supports new models for the local food system in the state, has received a $25,000 grant to fund its market-based, nutrition-education program.
The grant from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island’s BlueAngel program will fund the 2013 season of Healthy Foods, Healthy Families’ activities to teach parents and children about nutrition and local food systems.
The program will take place at six outdoor farmers markets in five economically disadvantaged cities across the state. The program is expected to impact approximately 1,600 low-income individuals, or 400 families of four.
“This award from Blue Cross is making the connection between food and health,” said Sheri Griffin, program director at Farm Fresh Rhode Island. •
