NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Rhode Island Fast Ferry will add a new vessel to expand service to Martha’s Vineyard and sightseeing cruises on Narragansett Bay this summer.

The company plans to add the Ava Pearl - a newly constructed, $6 million high-speed ferry – to its Martha’s Vineyard route.

The 150-passenger ferry, which is being built at the Gladding-Hearn Shipyard in Somerset and is slated to begin service in late June, will replace the current 400-passenger Millennium catamaran.

The Millennium catamaran will be used for daily sightseeing service, expanding the Rhode Island lighthouse cruises and sunset cruises on Narragansett Bay.

Previously, the lighthouse cruises were only available three days a week and were always sold out.

This year, the company will be offering the cruises seven days a week along with sunset cruises, corporate charters and special event cruises viewing the America’s Cup Races and the Tall Ships visiting the Bay in July.

“We are excited to be on the cutting edge of the fast ferry technology. We will be celebrating our 10th season and all our passengers will truly be benefiting from our success.” Rhode Island Fast Ferry President Charles A. Donadio Jr. said in prepared remarks.
