More than 20 employees of Fidelity Investments spent a day last month helping more than two dozen Providence children learn about and build solar-powered cars.
Fidelity teamed up with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence and the Center for Dynamic Learning as part of its commitment to having a positive influence on the lives of local children.
The group effort yielded three solar-powered cars, which were used in the inaugural Salem 900, a three-team race held the following day on Fidelity’s Smithfield campus.
“This unique opportunity underscores the importance of the innovative programs offered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Providence,” Fidelity said.
In addition to providing at-risk youth with a safe and positive environment to spend their out-of-school time, the clubs offer a variety of educational initiatives centered on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) model. Support from local businesses and organizations allows youth to gain hands-on exposure to these types of vocational studies and workforce-development skills. •
