PROVIDENCE – Fifteen people who engaged in what police called a narcotics trafficking operation at Kennedy Plaza and the surrounding downtown area were arrested and charged with felony unlawful delivery, according to Mayor Jorge O. Elorza.
The mayor announced the arrests on Monday, saying they followed an undercover police investigation that spanned several months.
With the assistance of a confidential source, police said they were able to facilitate several purchases of controlled substances from dealers at Kennedy Plaza, which is opposite City Hall and the hub for the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus service.
According to a press release, several of the individuals would come into Providence early in the morning from various cities and towns in Rhode Island to sell drugs in the downtown area. The drugs sold included Xanax, Klonopin, Clonazepam, amphetamines and cocaine.
Said Col. Hugh Clements, Providence chief of police: “Putting an end to this open air narcotics trafficking operation will help achieve our goal to maintain a drug-free atmosphere in this area so that citizens and visitors can enjoy everything that our vibrant downtown has to offer.”
