PROVIDENCE – The final phase of the $40 million Providence Road Improvement Project was marked Tuesday morning by Mayor Angel Taveras with an event on Warren Street.
The project, which launched last year as a result of a $40 million road bond passed in 2012, has paved more than 55 miles of roadways in the city.
An additional five miles will be paved next year. The project will repave and repair one out of every six roads in the city.
“We are proud of the progress we have made in just two short years. At the conclusion of this project, we will have paved more than 60 miles of Providence’s worst roads – paving those roads most in need first. This project has been a long-term investment in our infrastructure and the quality of life in Rhode Island’s capital city,” Taveras said in a statement.
In spring 2013,Taveras kicked off the first year of road repairs in Providence’s South Side. The second season of the road paving program began in April of this year with an event on the East Side.
Roads were selected for the project using a merit-based analysis that considered each road’s condition, repair cost, expected useful life and number of cars that travel across it daily.
Taveras was joined at the event by City Council members and Department of Public Works officials.
Residents can access a map of completed and planned road improvements from the city’s website homepage, www.providenceri.com..
