Finder.com: Rhode Islanders plan to spend $52 on Valentine’s Day gifts

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Islanders plan to spend an average of $52 on Valentine’s Day gifts this year, and while the amount isn’t as high as Kansas, where the average spending is expected to hit $117, it’s higher than New Hampshire, where it’s anticipated to reach only $31.

Finder.com, a personal finance comparison and education site, studied spending habits for the holiday, polling more than 3,000 Americans to discover how much they plan to spend on Valentine’s Day gifts.
Among the New England states, Rhode Islanders will spend the second-highest amount, behind only Massachusetts, where spending is estimated at $67.
At $36, Maine and Vermont residents do not plan to spend much more than bottom-ranked New Hampshire, while Connecticut residents plan to spend $45.
The survey also found that 37 percent of Americans do not plan to buy their partner a gift, and the longer one has been in a relationship, the cheaper the gift becomes.

Finder.com said that in the first five years the average spend is as much as $76, but after 20 years it drops to $49.
“And being married drops your odds: just 51 percent of husbands and 66 percent of wives receive a Valentine’s gift, compared with 69 percent of boyfriends and 76 percent of girlfriends,” Finder.com said.

And, in timely information provided by Estately, Rhode Islanders are using Google to search for Pandora charm bracelets, romantic hotels and couples dance lessons more than residents in any other state.

The real estate blog said it set out to find what Valentine’s Day-related gifts people in each state Google more frequently than people in all other states, and made its list by running hundreds of possible gift-related search queries through Google Trends, which ranks how frequently people in each state search for each term online.

“Either way, please remember this doesn’t show what people in each state Googled the most, it’s what search term or terms people in each state Googled more frequently than people in all other states,” Estately said.

Keeping that in mind, in neighboring Massachusetts, couples cooking classes top the list, and in Connecticut, top gifts are edible arrangements and smoking jackets. Interestingly, the list shows everything from Lord Byron poetry in Alabama and Barry White songs in Florida to a tandem bicycle in Iowa and bear skin rug in Washington.
