Firefighter terminated after insensitive Facebook comment

FREETOWN – A town call firefighter was removed from the department after posting racially insensitive comments on Facebook following a house party that drew more than 1,000 people late last month.

“I can see the next fire call will be this house on fire and I’ll make sure I can’t find the hydrant lol,” Kyle Grenier, a volunteer, paid-by-call firefighter, posted in a June 22 Facebook conversation, according to SouthCoastToday, the online version of The Standard-Times. In another post, Grenier said he would, “just make sure no water so no more house party’s [sic] with black Boston people.”

Fire Chief Gary Silvia told The Standard-Times on June 30 he was shocked by the comments, which he said have no place in the department.

Police had been told the June 18 party would be a small gathering but visitors came by bus and overwhelmed the normally quiet Assonet village neighborhood. There were no arrests, but Selectmen Chairman Paul Sadeck said the town will pursue legal action against the homeowners. •
