First-grade students at John J. Doran Community School in Fall River recently wrapped up a month-long lesson designed to stress the importance of using money wisely.

As part of the ABA Teach Children to Save program, local BankFive employees stepped into the classroom to teach basic financial principals and demonstrate the importance of saving money through learning techniques like hands-on scenarios.

BankFive also hosted a financial-literacy family night at Doran so that parents could also get in on the learning. During the event, a variety of information was provided on financial topics such as personal banking, lending, credit and identity theft.

The program ended with a Radio Disney Rockin’ Recess event where students participated in games and activities about finances, and won Disney prizes. All students who participated in the program received certificates of completion.

Teach Children to Save is a national campaign of volunteer bankers who have helped young people develop lifelong savings habits since 1997. •
