Five Questions With: Aaron Sawchuk

Aaron Sawchuk is the co-founder of ColoSpace Inc., a New England regional provider of outsourced data center and managed services with headquarters in Rockland, Mass., that recently announced plans to launch a data center in Providence.

Sawchuk spoke with Providence Business News about the changing landscape of IT infrastructure and what’s next for ColoSpace.

PBN: Can you explain the industry trend of companies opting for a “hybrid” approach when it comes to IT infrastructure?
SAWCHUK:
Many industry analysts initially predicted that virtually all of a company’s ?data and infrastructure would be moved to ‘the cloud’ within a few years. The actual results we are seeing, however, is that companies are choosing to use a variety of different infrastructure solutions – public cloud, private cloud, traditional data center outsourcing/colocation, and software-as-a-service – to meet their organization’s needs. Rather than using the one-solution-fits-all approach, they are looking at the application and business requirements and choosing what is right for each application. So what has emerged is literally a hybrid between all of these different infrastructure paradigms.

PBN: How has ColoSpace evolved since its founding in 2001 to meet the challenge of emerging trends such as cloud storage?
SAWCHUK:
ColoSpace has focused a tremendous amount of investment towards boosting overall capacities ?and specific enabling technologies. The biggest thing that cloud storage and related trends have brought the enterprise is that it is easier and cheaper than ever to consume storage and associated resources. As a result, customers are consuming exponentially more of them. This has resulted in a challenge and opportunity for the service provider. Those that are investing for the future are those that will be able to offer the most compelling and scalable solutions to their customers. ?

PBN: How have you worked to ensure the security of your data storage offerings in the cloud environment?
SAWCHUK:
Security is the number one concern of customers and prospective customers. We attempt to use three key approaches: strong encryption to keep the data safe, logical separation to keep one customer from being able to access another, and a continued investment in new security capabilities as threats emerge and evolve. This is another example where organizations need to make sure they do a considerable amount of due diligence when choosing the type of solution as well as their ultimate solution provider.?

PBN: What other services does ColoSpace provide that separates it from other IT companies?
SAWCHUK:
ColoSpace’s approach has been to offer a suite of services, from traditional colocation, managed services, and public and private cloud services, so that we are able to partner with firms to provide them with the most appropriate solution for their application and business requirements. This allows us to be truly consultative rather than push a customer into a specific solution that may not be a great fit for their needs. The depth and breadth of our services combined with our 13 years of operating history and experience is a true differentiator.

PBN: What’s next for ColoSpace going forward? Do you have plans to expand to additional data centers in New England?
SAWCHUK:
We are always looking at opportunities to grow, both in terms of into new adjacent markets as well as with new products and services. Our goal is to continue to extend our reach as well as make sure we stay relevant to our customers’ growing requirements.
