PROVIDENCE – Five of the eight hospitals in Rhode Island rated by the Leapfrog Group received A grades in the national nonprofit group’s 2016 spring safety score report released this week.
Rhode Island also ranked second in the nation, tying with Maine, for its high percentage of A hospitals at 62.5 percent.
Vermont ranked first for 83.3 percent of its hospitals receiving A grades, or five out of six. Massachusetts was fourth on the list for having 36 A hospitals out of 58, or 62.1 percent.
In Rhode Island, Newport Hospital, South County Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Miriam Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital all received A grades, while Kent County Memorial Hospital and Westerly Hospital received B grades and Landmark Medical Center received a C.
In Southeastern Massachusetts, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford, St. Anne’s Hospital and Charlton Memorial Hospital, both in Fall River, and Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, received As, while Morton Hospital in Taunton received a B.
Leapfrog looked at more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide in the report, assessing medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections to come up with its findings.
“The Hospital Safety Score alerts consumers to the dangers, but as this analysis shows, even A hospitals are not perfectly safe,” Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in a statement.
