Flames of Hope preps for 9th year

Flames of Hope: A Celebration of Life, an event by the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation promoting breast cancer awareness, will be held Oct. 10-12 at Station Park in Providence.
Now in its ninth year, the three-day event promotes education and honors people living with the disease. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“What began as a small family foundation has transformed into something we never imagined, and it would not have been possible without our community partners and volunteers,” said Maria Gemma, executive director of the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. “Ten years later, we’re still here for individuals and families affected by breast cancer and are proud to continue our work of providing education, awareness, and support to thousands in our local communities.”
The Oct. 10 kickoff features the unveiling of the Foundation’s 2015 ‘Celebrate Hope, Celebrate Life’ Calendar, which depicts individuals who have tested positive for the BRCA gene mutation. The gene increases a person’s chances of developing breast or ovarian cancer.
Sponsors for the calendar include South County Hospital, Admirals Bank, and 21st Century Oncology. Supporting sponsors are the Rhode Island Rehabilitation Center and Dr. David L. Renaud.
On Oct. 11, “Celebration Village” starts at 2 p.m. and includes education, live entertainment, and food, followed at night by an “Illuminations of Life Ceremony” on State House steps that ends with a torch procession.
On Oct. 12, there will be three races in the Flames of Hope Run/Walk Series: the Gloria Gemma 5K presented by The Walking Company; Kids Fun Run presented by Macy’s; and Pink Pump Palooza presented by Nordstrom’s.
