Food bank gets 15,000 pound of apples

PROVIDENCE – Fifteen thousand pounds of Washington state apples arrived at the Rhode Island Community Food Bank on May 2, a donation facilitated by Stop & Shop and FirstFruits Marketing of Washington.
The donation is part of the Take a Bite Out of HungerProgram sponsored by FirstFruits.
The Washington company started the campaign to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States. In 2014, Stop & Shop and five other retailers participated in the campaign, which collected a total of 200,000 pounds of apples for donation to local food banks throughout the United States and Canada.
“Stop & Shop is a long-term and very generous supporter of the Food Bank,” said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “From sponsoring fundraising events to literally putting food onto the tables of the people we serve, they are tremendous partners in our work.”
The food bank serves 68,000 people through its statewide network of food pantries. One in three served is a child under the age of 18.
